You Can’t Change The Channel, But You Can Turn Down the Volume

Before the internet, social media, and the endless supply of on-demand content, we consumed media in a different way. If we didn't like what was on the radio, we switched to another station. If we didn't like what was on TV we changed the channel. If we didn't like anything on TV, we found something better to do.

But social media platforms are like a TV, with no option to change the channel. We might be able to unfollow and unfriend, But the internet has become a 24-7 reality TV show, where there's always something on and billions of people broadcast highlight reels from their lives.

Even a web site like Medium gives you limited ability to customize your experience. I tried to sign up for a new account where I could follow only the writers I wanted to read. But that wasn't an option.

When we can't change the channel, we drown in a sea of noise, unable to hear the sound of our own creative voices. Maybe you can't change the channel, but you can always turn down the volume by deleting distracting apps from your phone and quitting social media.
