The Virality Illusion

As sites like Buzzfeed rose in popularity, and authors like Jonah Berger published books like Contagious, we got obsessed with reverse engineering virality. Creating content become more about reaching eyeballs than touching hearts.

Out of the 1000's of blog posts I've written, a grand total of 3 have gone viral. I didn't get my book deal because of one post that went viral. I got it because of all the ones that came before it . There's a difference between virality and sustainability. You can build a career off the latter.

People to believe they can build careers by being a one-hit wonder. But viral sensations are a domino effect. The creator lines up thousands of dominos until one tips.
