The Performance Improvement Debacle

Every year managers put underperforming employees on performance improvement plans. But, the fundamental premise of a performance improvement plan is flawed. If somebody is lousy at something, performance improvement is a way to make them average at it.

But, it does more to help organizations to avoid wrongful termination suits than it does to improve performance.

I was written off by many managers as lazy and uninterested in controlling my own destiny. But if Bill Gates and Lebron James traded jobs for a day, we might draw the same conclusion.

What's often overlooked is a mismatch between talent and environment, a person's abilities, and their role — something to consider if you want to avoid the performance improvement debacle.
