Retinoschisis began to rob Erik Weihenmayer of his vision by the age of 13, but he resisted the idea that blindness would sweep him to the sidelines of life. Erik became an accomplished wrestler in high school and eventually became the first blind person to ever reach the summit of Mt. Everest when he did so in 2001. Erik Weihenmayer began to lose his sight when he was just 13, but he didn't let that slow him down. He became an accomplished wrestler, middle school teacher, and then world-renowned climber. He was the first blind person to reach the summit of Mt. Everest in 2001, and he's the author of several books including No Barriers: A Blind Man's Journey to Kayak the Grand Canyon and Touch the Top of the World.
