Making Better Art

There's an eternal gap between our ambitions and abilities, between who we are and who we want to become. Ira Glass calls this the taste gap. We have a taste for art that we admire, but lack the skills to create it.

No baby falls out of the womb knowing how to walk. It's a process of falling, getting up, falling, two steps back, and twenty forward.

Making better art is the same. If you keep making art, eventually you'll make better art. You'll bridge the gap between your ambitions and your abilities.

But once that happens, your ambitions will evolve. There will be a new gap to bridge. The only way to keep making better art is to make more art.
