Hubris, Determination, and Earning Your Spot

Tom Brady was the 199th pick in his draft year. He was the fourth-string quarterback for the Patriots. Playing time didn't seem likely.

On the first day of practice, he walked up to Bob Kraft, the owner of the Patriots and said: "Mr. Kraft my name is Tom Brady."

Kraft replied "I know who you are"

Tom Brady said, "I'm going to be the best decision you've ever made."


Some people have hubris. But they don't have the determination. Arrogance without determination is ego. And ego is the enemy of just about everything worthwhile.

When there were no guarantees of external rewards, being the starting quarterback, and making millions, Brady showed up. He earned his spot. He did the work that transformed him into the best decision Bob Kraft ever made.
