Filters and Biases

We don't see the world as it is. We see it through the filters of our values, and beliefs. We see it through the filters of our programming, parents, and peers.

The content we consume creates a filter bubble. This is particularly dangerous when you see the world through what Cal Newport referred to as "the walled garden of social media conglomerates."

Given that algorithms are designed to show us more of what we already agree with, this strengthens our cognitive bias. It keeps us from seeing the world as it is. It causes us to see the world solely through filters that reinforce what we already believe.

Our filters create our worldview. Our worldview determines our beliefs. And our beliefs determine our actions. If we're unaware of our filters and biases, we run the risk of making bad decisions.
