Allocating Your 3 Most Important Resources

When it comes to life and work, we all 3 primary resources: time, money, and attention. How you allocate those resources will determine how quickly you make progress towards your most important goals. Time is the most valuable asset you have. Attention is the currency of achievement. If you allocate your time and attention accordingly, that can lead to money.

In 1999, when I told the CFO of a startup where I was an intern that I wanted to make a lot of money, he asked me what I though money gave you. As any 20-year-old might, I rattled off a list of material possessions. Then he said, "you're wrong. What money buys you is time."

With the money I'm able to hire someone on TaskRabbit to build my Ikea furniture. What I get back for that money is time. It usually takes me half a day to build Ikea furniture, while someone on TaskRabbit can build my bookshelf in an hour.
